I will lie down and sleep in peace

I will lie down and sleep in peace

There was a strong pressure on my chest. I felt something heavy pushing me, making me breathless. I felt suffocated and could not move an inch. I wanted to move my fingers, lift my hands and body. I wanted to get up and sit. However, I was immovable.  I thought I was going to die.

I tried to call upon the name of Jesus. I wanted to shout ‘Jesus, Jesus, please help me’, but the words would not form in my mouth. Not even air came out of my lips. I tried to wake my husband sleeping beside me. However, the pressure was thrusting me down and I felt immobile. I kept calling upon the name of Jesus. After several seconds, I tried to gasp for air, moved my figures and hands and jumped to the sitting position. I was breathing heavily. I was scared thinking that I had a heart attack.

But, the moment I woke up from my sleep, I knew I was alright and that it was a nightmare. I prayed and went back to sleep.

For about four or five years I suffered, due to the same nightmare. I used to get it now and then and got deeply affected by it.

I started seeking God’s help and prayed that I should have undisturbed sleep every night. It was then, that I happened to read these verses.

I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. Ps 4:8

I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me Ps 3:5

Though I read the bible every day, it was only in 2007 that I realized that God was speaking to me through the above verses. Since then, every night before going to bed, I place my fingers on these verses, read them and ask God to give me a peaceful sleep.

Praise God, it has been ten years. Not once did I get that nightmare again. God keeps His promises. He is a faithful God.  True to his words, “so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty” Isa. 55:11, “Does he promise and not fulfil?” Num. 23:19. God never forsakes us if we trust in him.

Are you having sleepless nights? It may not be because of a nightmare, but could be because of a recent job loss, debts, family issues or relationships. It could be because of acid reflux or breathing problems or a more serious illness. No matter what, God will be with you.

Just read the above verses with faith every night and see God delivering you from all your problems. God will make it possible for you to sleep peacefully every night.
