Your Life’s Mission

Everyone is born to achieve something in life. There is a definite purpose in our birth. God has designed each one of us with a specific purpose and it is for you and me to know what it is and to go in search of it. Your Life’s Mission might be more challenging than mine or it may be less productive than your friend’s. Nevertheless, you have a mission to accomplish during your lifetime. How do you wish to go about it?

I wish to share with you a simple rule of ‘three P’s’ for having a focused life’s mission. Your life will be more meaningful and fulfilling when you follow these three P’s - for Your Life’s Mission.

Three P’s for Your Life’s Mission

Know your PURPOSE

The first thing that you need to do for having a purposeful life’s mission is setting targets. You need to identify specific goals that you would like to achieve in your life. These goals need to be in terms of short-term goals and long-term goals. Short-term goals could be anything that you would like to achieve within a period of one year. On the other hand, long-term goals are those that you wish to achieve between one and five years. Always remember to set SMART goals in your life. By SMART goals, I mean, goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound. You need to set goals that you will be able to accomplish using the knowledge, skills, resources, time, and strengths that you possess. Do not set goals that are far-reaching, making it impossible for you to achieve. Furthermore, set goals realistically. Chase after your dreams, but not after fantasies.

So what do you need to do?
  • Identify what you want to do with your life
  • Narrow down on what you want to accomplish in your life
  • List your strengths and skills
  • Set SMART goals

Have a PLAN

Once you have set focused goals, the next thing to do is to make your plans. Planning is a mature process of going after your goals. Here again, have realistic plans. Check all possible alternatives before formulating plans. Take your time to implement your plans. Set small and achievable action steps. Take one-step at a time and persevere to achieve your goals.

When you plan to achieve your goals, remember the following:
  • Your plans need to be based on your abilities, available resources, knowledge and environment support
  • Be persistent in following your plans
  • Have alternative plans up your sleeve
  • Be focused on the benefits that you want to bring to you and to those around you

Check your PROGRESS

This is an important step, because you need to know whether you are going in the right direction. Keep monitoring your progress at regular intervals. Do not wait until the end to check your progress. Because, you may not be able to change your course of direction, in case anything went wrong. Therefore, evaluate your progress as you move along the path. If you are not successful the first time, do not fret. Keep trying and keep moving forward.

Remember the following:
  • Do not give up or be discouraged in case of catastrophes or failures
  • Keep trying other ways of achieving your goals
  • Get feedback from reliable sources
  • Make changes in your plans if necessary

In Your Life’s Mission, you may not always have the luxury of having a smooth ride. However, do not settle to float in the rough river. It will take you somewhere that you had no intention of going. Rather, swim through, put a fight, and reap the fruits of a positive life’s mission.
