During lent, people usually give up habits or luxuries/prized things as a sign of connecting with Jesus’ sufferings. Fasting, giving up certain foods, abstaining from smoking/alcohol, prayer, meditation and so on are common things that people practice during lent. As much as these are welcomed, we need to think if we could internalize the sufferings of Jesus in a more personal way.
Yes, I know it is not so easy to practice as to say. However, let us try to focus on Jesus instead of focusing on ourselves, or rather on testing our self-control once a year for 40 days.
In Mark 9: 2-3, 7 we read the following. After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them…. Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud. “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”
Oxford Dictionary defines the word ‘transfigure’ as “transform into something more beautiful or elevated”. In Cambridge Dictionary, we find the definition as “to change the appearance of a person or thing very much, usually in a very positive and often spiritual way”.
During this lent, and for the days to come, let us try to be transfigured in Jesus Christ. Being imitators of Jesus will make us more beautiful in Him. It only requires us to do three simple things, taking cue from the above verse.
Allow Jesus to lead you
Jesus is ready to lead you. Submit to His will and follow his footsteps; allow him to direct your path. Lean not on your own understanding.
Be with Jesus alone
Everyday spend some time alone with God. Read the word of God and wait in His presence for understanding his words. It will do you good to speak to God first thing in the morning before you do anything else.
Listen to Jesus
As you meditate, listen carefully to His voice. He may speak to you in a gentle whisper or through songs/teachings, or through the words of friends/family.
Let the remaining days in this lent be more purposive. Get closer to Jesus and he will come close to you. Jesus will transfigure you into a beautiful person.
