Let me ask you a question. Are you a motivated person? I am sure your answer is a definite YES. That is because all of us are motivated one way or the other. Different people are motivated in different ways at different points in their lives. The things that motivated me when I was 16 years old would not motivate me anymore. Similarly, the factors that motivate me would not motivate you. Motivation is something that is personal to you and depends on your values, beliefs and perceptions towards life.
Therefore, let me put it this way. A person is motivated in two ways – externally and internally.
External & Internal Motivation:
You can motivate a person at work externally in ways like recognition, appreciation, awards, benefits, promotion or pay rise. External motivators bring external outcomes for a particular behavior or action. However, you need to know that most of these external motivators are done by people or organizations in order to influence you or to make you act in a way as desired by them.
On the other hand, a person is internally motivated when he/she does something that brings him/her a feeling of satisfaction and happiness. You do not act or behave in a particular manner expecting some external rewards. You do it because you want to do it and enjoy it. Examples of internal motivators are setting specific goals, trying to achieve something, having a desire to learn a new skill or pursuing a passion. Hence, various factors concerning you and yours influence motivation.
In my previous post on Self-Motivation, I listed the factors of Self-Motivation as viewed by Daniel Goleman*, an expert on Emotional Intelligence. According to him, the four elements that make up motivation are Personal drive, Commitment, Initiative and Optimism. Based on these factors, I posted a Questionnaire on Self-Motivation.
Self-Motivation Questionnaire - II:
In this post, I wish to list some other factors that essentially characterize self-motivation. These include risk-taking, self-efficacy, self-confidence, setting goals and being organized & managing time. I have presented few statements under each of these components in a sample questionnaire on Self-Motivation.
